World Telecommunication Day is an international day celebrated on 17th May every year. This day was proclaimed in November 2006 by the International Telecommunication Union Plenipotentiary Conference in Turkey. This day aims to assist the digital divide. The main aim of this day was to create awareness of social changes, arrived by the Internet and new technologies. 

Objective of World Telecommunication Day

This day is known as World Telecommunication Day to induce the foundation of the International Telecommunication Union on 17th May 1865. This was initiated by the Plenipotentiary Conference in Malaga-Torremolinos in 1973. The main aim of  World Telecommunication Day is to make awareness in producing chances of using the internet, other information, and communication technologies.  This makes the connectivity between societies and economies. 

History of World Telecommunication Day

Initially,  World Telecommunication Day was initiated in 1969. The Day was celebrated in 2005, when the World Summit on the Information Society asked the UN General Assembly for declaring May 17 as World Information Society Day (WISD). In March 2006, the UN General Assembly declared that World Information Society Day would take place on 17th May every year. Both the celebrations were combined, by the ITU in a Plenipotentiary Conference in Turkey’s Antalya as the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day(WTISD).

World Telecommunication Day is celebrated with the aim to create awareness of the possibilities that the use of the Internet performs. This can connect the gap between society and economies. This day makes the increasing awareness of communication technology among the people in the world. This day aims to create information and communication, easily available to people living in rural parts of the world. This day marks the significance of communication in our lives through various technologies.
