World Book and Copyright Day is celebrated on 23rd April 1995 every year. This day is also known as World Book Day. It is an annual day, organized by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization). On 23rd April 1995, the first World Book Day was observed.  The General Conference of UNESCO was held in Paris in 1995, which decided to commemorate a day for reading and books.  April 23 is observed as World Book Day because many authors were born and many authors died on this day. William Shakespeare, Josep Pla, and Miguel de Cervantes died on April 23, while Muarice Druon and Manuel Mejia Vallejo were born on this Day. 

World Book Day is celebrated to achieve the aim of promoting the reading habit in people.  audience. World Book Day aims to make people open themselves inspite of the distance through imagination. The Book reading increases the way of thinking and promotes the importance of reading among the readers. The habit of reading helps people to explore different topics and gain knowledge. Moreover, the habit of reading increases the literacy rate in each country despite the social background. The Books endeavors to make the habit of self-thinking among the people. In some cases, the people’s reliability on others can be limited, if regular book reading is practiced. 

World Book Day was initiated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on 23rd April 1995. This date is selected for the World Book Day because it is the anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare and prominent Spanish chronicler Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. Before this, there were many ideas for the celebration of World Book And Copyright Day. Valencian writer Vicente Clavel Andrés said that the day should be on a day that honored the author Miguel de Cervantes.  April 23 was the day on which William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega had also died,so it was chosen as World Book Day.

Importance of World Book Day

At the pandemic time, when countries saw most periods of confinement and people were restricted to spend their time outside, books served as the tool to overcome isolation, build bonding people, enlargen the horizons. The books stimulated the minds and creativity of people. In some countries, the number of books read was doubled. Books play a vital role in buying decisions. The book can be decided by its cover. People must learn to know self-access themselves, which can be achieved by reading a lot of books.
