Her father, Johnny Brown, was a lawyer who became the chief attorney for the Miami-Dade County School Board. Her father is a graduate of the University of Miami School of Law. Her mother, Ellery, worked as school Principal at the New World School of the Arts. She was brought up in the Miami Florida area. She completed her school education at Miami Palmetto Senior High School in 1988. She won the National oratory title at the National Catholic Forensic League championships in New Orleans.

Ketanji Career

After completing her education in law school, Jackson worked as a law clerk to Judge Patti B. Saris of the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. She served in that post from 1996 to 1997. She worked under judge Bruce M. Selya of the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit from 1997 to 1998. For a year, she served in private practice in Washington, D.C. She clerked for Justice Stephen Breyer of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1999 to 2000. Obama nominated Jackson to become vice-chair of the United States Sentencing Commission in 2009.
