Thus, he became the third recorded contestant to ever do so. But, Charles Ingram declined the winnings due to suspicion of cheating.

In 2003, after a trial at Southwark Crown Court, which lasted four weeks, Charles, his wife and Whittock were convicted by a majority verdict of "acquiring the execution of a valuable security by fraud". Charles Ingram, his wife and Whittock obtained suspended prison sentences. Mr and Mrs Ingrams were sentenced to 18 months, while Whittock was sentenced to 12 months. Each was fined £15,000, and each was ordered to pay £10,000 towards prosecution costs.
