Weary Willie Day 2021

On December 9th, Weary Willie Day honours the art of clowning and its impact on our lives. This holiday was named after Emmett Kelly's character, who was born on this day in 1898. Weary Willie was a one-of-a-kind clown character. Weary Willy was created by Kelly when the white-faced, goofy clown was the norm, and selling the idea of a sad, down-on-his-luck clown did not fit the formula that most circuses were looking for. Kelly put on the white face and brightly coloured costume again for the time being. When the country was in the grip of the Great Depression, times and attitudes shifted. The nation's face was oppressed and weary of the world. People could relate to Weary Willie in ways they hadn't before. Weary Willie, with his frowning, whisker-shadowed face and dirty, ripped, and worn costume became an American icon.

Weary Willie Day 2021 - History

Kelly was born in 1898 and began his career as a trapeze artist and cartoonist before creating the Weary Willie character. He played the traditional white-faced, happy-go-lucky clown when he first began' clowning around. He had the idea to create a contrasting, sad clown as early as the 1920s, but it wasn't easy to sell it to management. During the Great Depression that began in the United States in 1929, many migrant workers were forced to travel to earn a living. As they were dubbed, these' hobos' inspired Kelly to reconsider his unpopular idea. Given the new circumstances that made his idea more acceptable and relevant, management finally agreed, and Weary Willie was born. The character captured the zeitgeist and quickly became the most recognisable clown figure in the United States. Weary Willie, unlike other clowns, was not completely covered in white paint and did not wear brightly coloured clothing. He appeared to be an unemployed tramp with an upside-down smile painted on his painted mouth, which made people feel better and lifted their spirits. While the origins of this holiday are unknown, it coincides with Kelly's birthday, who was inducted into the International Clown Hall of Fame in 1989 and the International Circus Hall of Fame in 1994. The sad clown model reminds us to take life's difficulties with a grain of salt.
