Is Waitangi Day A Public Holiday 2022?

In New Zealand, this day is recognized as a public holiday unless it falls on a weekend, in which instance the following Monday becomes a public holiday. The first commemoration of Waitangi Day took place in 1934, but it was not proclaimed a public holiday until 1954. New Zealand Day was celebrated until 1976 when it was renamed Waitangi Day.

History of Waitangi Day 2022

Though the country's laws declare today a public holiday, it is also a time to reflect on the controversies surrounding the Treaty of Waitangi and its impact on modern society.

The Treaty of Waitangi was first signed on February 6, 1840, between representatives of the British Crown and more than 40 Mori chiefs. By September 1840, 500 Mori leaders had signed copies of the pact distributed around New Zealand.

The Treaty of Waitangi lays forth the grounds upon which Mori leaders and British authorities agreed to construct a nation-state and form a government. There has been tremendous dispute over the Treaty in regarding the land ownership due to major variations between the Mori and English language versions of the Treaty, and it has since been a point of conflict.

Waitangi Day was first observed in 1934, and the New Zealand Labour Party endorsed it as a national holiday in their party manifesto in 1957. Later that year, legislation was enacted designating this date as a national holiday. However, many objected to the day being renamed New Zealand Day since it appeared to devalue 'Te Tiriti'. The Waitangi Day Act of 1976 reinstated the original name and made it a public holiday.

Every year on February 6, Waitangi Day is commemorated across New Zealand. Any time of the year, the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, where the agreement was initially signed, is a fantastic spot to learn about the Treaty of Waitangi.
