Goddess Parvati is said to have fasted for Lord Parameshwara and her family's happiness and prosperity, according to devotees. Many married women began fasting for the well-being of their husbands and children in honour of Parvati's devotion and love for her consort. They start the day by fasting and waking up early.

The women observing Varalakshmi Vrat must abstain from eating specific kinds of foods. This, however, differs from one place to the next. In some regions, the vrat observer is required to fast until the puja ceremony is completed.

The worshippers take a bath and then remove the Kalasha used for puja on Saturday, the day following puja. The water from the Kalasha is sprayed throughout the house, and any rice that is utilised is mixed in with the rice already on hand.
