The 'Vara MahaLakshmi Vrata' is a Hindu celebration that takes place on the Second Friday, or the Friday before the full moon - Poornima - in the month of Shravana, which corresponds to the Gregorian months of July–August. By 2022, this day falls on 12th August which is also a Friday.

Varalakshmi Vratham 2022 Story

In the ancient Magadha Kingdom, a woman named Charumathi lived in the town of Kundinyapura. The Deity Mahalakshmi appeared in her dream, impressed by her devotion to the goddess, and asked her to worship Varalakshmi (Vara = boon, Lakshmi = goddess of wealth) and seek to fulfil her wishes. Varalakshmi is another name for the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi. The prayer/worship had to be performed on the Friday of Shravana month, just before the full moon night. When Charumathi told her family about her dream, they encouraged her to do the pooja. Several other village ladies joined her in conducting the puja in the traditional manner.

Women worship Goddess Lakshmi with utmost devotion on this day, offering fruits, sweets, and flowers. A kalasam (representing the deity) is usually dressed in a saree, flowers, and gold jewellery, with offerings placed in front. After the pooja is done, a rakshai/saradu (holy thread) is among the offerings and worn by ladies on their wrists. This is worn to represent protection and piety, and numerous things are offered in good faith as presents and charity. There are no restrictions on caste or creed when doing this puja. Many ladies still attend this ancient festival, praying to Varamahalakshmi for her blessings of riches and healthy life for their families and friends.

Varalakshmi Vratham 2022 Significance

Siri (Wealth), Bhu (earth), Sarasvathi (Wisdom), Preethi (love), Keerthi (Fame), Shanthi (Peace), Santhushti (contentment), and Pushti are the eight powers or energy recognised (Strength). Each of these energies is known as a 'Lakshmi,' also known as:

  • Lakshmi Aadi (the Protector)

  • Lakshmi Dhana (Goddess of Wealth)

  • Lakshmi Dhairya (Goddess of Courage)

  • Lakshmi Sowbhagya (Goddess of Prosperity)

  • Lakshmi Vijaya (Goddess of Victory)

  • Lakshmi Dhanya (Goddess of Nourishment)

  • Lakshmi Santaana (Goddess of Progeny)

  • Lakshmi Vidhya (Goddess of Wisdom)

The Hindus refer to all eight forces as the Ashta Lakshmis, or the eight Lakshmis. Vishnu is also known as 'Ashtalakshmi Pathi,' which translates to 'the consort of the eight Lakshmis,' or forces. In reality, because abstract force is beyond the perception of ordinary people, Vishnu, who represents the preservation part of the universe, radiates these feminine qualities of Lakshmi personified and worshipped as such. Because the harmonious interaction of these elements is necessary for good health, riches, and success, Lakshmi devotion is considered to bring all three. This event is mostly observed by ladies in order to invoke the goddess Lakshmi's favours.
