UFO

UFO is a 1970 British science fiction television series about a government defense organization's continual clandestine operations to avert an extraterrestrial invasion of Earth. Gerry Anderson and Sylvia Anderson wrote it with Reg Hill, and it was produced by the Andersons and Lew Grade's Century 21 for Grade's ITC Entertainment firm. Over more than a year, a single season of 26 episodes (including the pilot) was filmed. UFO was crazily ambitious, darker than the popular Star Trek program in the United States, and used all the tricks, models, gear, and special effects to bring one hell of a far-out series to life. And now, much like the series, it's time to take off and catch up with the cast of this techy series.

Where Is The Cast Of UFO?

Ed Bishop - Commander Ed Straker

Commander Ed Straker is a retired American Air Force colonel and astronaut who established SHADO in 1970 due to several UFO encounters. Bishop's hair was bleached initially blonde, but they eventually switched to a wig to avoid hurting the follicles. Bishop owned this wig and would wear it to science fiction events. There were quite a few wigs in space. Bishop played Straker as the archetypal cool guy, and Anderson thought this character would launch him into even better roles, but that didn't happen.
Ed began his career as an ambulance driver in Stanley Kubrick's 1962 film Lolita. He continued to work until he met Gerry and Sylvia Anderson for the late-'60s series Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons, essentially like witnessing old-school GI Joe action toys come to life. He delivered the show's narration and Captain Blue's voice for that project. This resulted in acting in UFO in 1970. Throughout the 1980s, he continued to act, appearing on programs such as The Kenny Everett Television Show and Whoops Apocalypse. In 1980, he performed the voice for the science fiction picture Saturn 3, starring Kirk Douglas and Farrah Fawcett.
He continued to perform until the early 2000s. Still, Ed Bishop died in 2005 at the age of 72, just three days before his 73rd birthday, from a chest infection, caught while receiving leukemia treatment. He died five days after his UFO co-star Michael Billington. Following Bishop's death, Gerry Anderson issued a statement in which he stated quote, "Ed Bishop is one of the most gifted people I've ever worked with, and my only disappointment was that he didn't go on to become a worldwide sensation." I would have liked for him to be James Bond."

Michael Billington - Colonel Paul Foster

Colonel Paul Foster is a former test pilot whose aircraft was severely damaged when Sky One of SHADO intercepted and destroyed a UFO. Straker offered him a place within the organization when his continuous investigation of the accident threatened to reveal SHADO's existence. And from Bishop, whom Anderson hoped had played Bond, to Billington, who auditioned for the infamous double-O role and was a solid contender to replace Sean Connery's term.
Michael first appeared on the scene in 1964. He got off to a good start, and by 1966, he had booked a 23-episode arc on the sitcom United! He starred in the BBC drama The Collectors in 1986, although this would be his final significant acting role before retiring and teaching at Lee Strasberg's acting school in London throughout the 1990s. As stated previously, Billington died of cancer at the age of 63 in 2005, just before Ed Bishop died.

Dolores Mantez - Lieutenant Nina Berry

Lieutenant Nina Berry was one of Straker's first SHADO recruits. She also works as a space tracker at Moonbase and eventually takes over as its commanding officer from Lieutenant Ellis. And Dolores was the finest at rocking that purple wig, pulling off that genuine one-of-a-kind hue.
After a chance meeting, Dolores Mantez started singing early in her career gained her a tiny part in the 1959 film Sapphire. She eventually landed minor parts in huge series like The Avengers, which featured Diana Rigg, and even appeared on the show Secret Agent. But she is most known for her role as Lt. Barry because she met a businessman called Robert Harding at a pub shortly after, and they married soon after. Dolores quit the entertainment industry after the birth of their son. Dolores had a quiet profile until her untimely death in 2012 at 76.

Ayshea Brough - Lieutenant Ayshea Johnson

Lt. Ayshea Johnson is a SHADO headquarters officer who spends much of her time walking about with a clipboard and looking stunning.
Ayshea began her acting career in 1958. Her most famous part was undoubtedly UFO, but she also appeared as herself on multiple occasions, notably on her pop program, Lift Off with Ayshea, which aired for six years in 1969. That's because she's more of a pop vocalist than an actor, releasing songs considerably more frequently during the 1960s and 1970s. She was also frequent on game programs, including The Golden Shot and Celebrity Squares.
Ayshea developed a significant fandom for her live cabaret performances. She even represented the United Kingdom at the World Popular Song Festival in Tokyo with a song composed for her by Elton John, "The Flowers Will Never Die." In 1985, Ayshea relocated to Los Angeles and acted in films such as Gotcha before marrying CBS Sportsline creator Mike Levy. For many years, Beverly Hills was her home, and she became a Beverly Hills socialite while also running a property development and interior design firm. Ayshea returned to the UK in 2000 to be closer to her mother, Rose. She's now in her mid-seventies and living a much peaceful life, which she richly deserves.

George Sewell - Colonel Alec Freeman

Colonel Alec Freeman is Straker's closest friend and right-hand man. He is a former pilot and intelligence officer. He was laid back and excellent in command until the more aesthetically pleasing Col. Lake took over, a switch made with no reason.
George Sewell did not explore acting until he was 35 years old when he met actor Dudley Sutton in a pub by happenstance. Sutton suggested that Sewell audition for production by Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop, and he was cast as a policeman in both the Stratford East and West End productions. His theatre expertise would later lead to his involvement in television and cinema. In 1965, he appeared in numerous episodes of The Power Game, and in 1967, he appeared in the long-running gritty drama Z Cars.
Following UFO, he starred as Detective Chief Craven in the detective program Special Branch. He continued his investigative work in the '90s sitcom The Detectives. Is there a recurring theme here? He was last seen in 2006 in an episode of the show Casualty. In the superbly done 1979 mini-series Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, he had a crucial role. George died of cancer the following year, at the age of 82.

Gabrielle Drake - Lieutenant Ellis

Lt. Ellis is sometimes depicted as lacking self-confidence, and at other times as a no-nonsense take-charge kind of officer. When it is alleged that she is romantically engaged with interceptor pilot Mark Bradley, she is momentarily moved to SHADO HQ. But it just got Drake kicked off the cast of UFO for her ventures, which is a shame because she looked stunning in her silver jumpsuit.
Gabrielle Drake began her career in show business in 1963 and had several minor parts until gaining her big break in UFO in 1970. She then made her feature film debut as a co-star in Crossplot in 1969, followed by Connecting Rooms. Drake satisfied the expectations of most male UFO fans by starring in a series of successful British sexploitation films at the time. She appeared entirely naked or topless in several scenes, notably in 1972's "Au Pair Girls." She was also a significant part of the first four seasons of The Brothers' program, which aired in 1972. Because the program was so famous, Drake's most prominent part.
Drake is now 77 years old and resides at Wenlock Abbey in a property she bought with her husband in 1983. It also happens to be a restored medieval castle.

UFO Plot

Alien visitors from a dying planet abduct humans and take their organs for their bodies. The extraterrestrial invasions might be a precursor to a full-scale invasion. The main cast of characters in the series is the employees of SHADO(an acronym for Supreme Headquarters Alien Defence Organisation), a secret, the high-tech international military agency established by the governments of the United Kingdom, the United States, the Soviet Union, France, and Germany (believed to be West Germany because the city of Bonn is mentioned alongside Washington, Paris, and Moscow) to defend Earth and humanity against the mysterious aliens and learn more about them while keeping the threat of an alien extinction at bay.
