Thiruvathirai 2021

The Thiruvathirai festival takes place on Thiruvathira Nakshatra day in the Malayalam month of Dhanu Masam (December – January). The Thiruvathirai Festival will be held on December 19, 2021. Thiruvathirai is also the name of a popular Kerala dance form performed on the day. The festival is primarily dedicated to Lord Shiva, and there are two popular beliefs: on the day, Lord Shiva burned Kamadeva to ashes. Another legend is Lord Shiva's return to the world after completing the harsh austerities and tapas that he had been performing following the death of Goddess Sati. The festival is solely for women and recalls one of the desirable positions women held in Kerala society during the medieval period. The festival is covered by the cultural departments of the Indian government. Lord Shiva is honored in all rituals and pujas.

Significance Of Thiruvathirai 2021

On Thiruvathira, women fast and eat only wheat preparations, avoiding rice meals. Plantain fruits, tender coconuts, and other foods are also available. They also chew betel and have red lips. Puthen Thiruvathira or Poothiruvathira is the first Thiruvathira after a girl's marriage. Previously, this was celebrated on a grand scale, but most people now skip the functions. On the day, Oonjal Attam is amused by swinging on an oonjal (swing). Women vigil for Shiva on Thiruvathira night and perform Thiruvathira kali or Kaikottikali. They form a circle around the lit brass lamp and clap their hands as they dance each step to the rhythm of the songs they sing. Another popular custom on the day is the Pathirappoochoodal, which translates as "wearing flowers at midnight." An image of Lord Shiva is placed in the central courtyard at midnight on Thiruvathira, and flowers, plantains, and jaggery are offered to the deity. They then perform Kaikottikali in the presence of the deity. They take flowers from the offering and wear them. Several dishes made from tubers are prepared on the day, including the famous Thiruvathira Puzhukku, which is made from elephant yam and other locally available tubers. On this day, the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu celebrates the Andhra Darshan – a festival dedicated to Shiva's Nataraja dance.

This has been celebrated by the Nambuthiri, Kshatriya, and Nair communities of Kerala from the days of yore. It is essentially a festival for women; unmarried women observe a partial fast to get good husbands, and married women take a fast from the preceding day Makayiram nakshatra and on the day of Thiruvathira for the well being of their husbands and family. The first Thiruvathira of a newly wedded woman is her Poothiruvathira.

Thiruvathirakali in Tamil Nadu

Thirvathirai kali is a special pudding made as a sacrifice to Lord Nataraja. Then there's Ezhu Kootu, a savory dish made with seven vegetables and pulses, including raw banana, sweet potato, yam, yellow pumpkin, broad beans, beans, cluster beans, okra, brinjal, colocasia, mocha (Lima or butter beans), and so on. Thiruvathirai kali is a particular type of pudding. Another story behind this pudding's preparation is that Lord Shiva named Sendanar was a poor devotee. He rendered complete service to humanity and the temples. Lord Shiva disguised himself and went to his house to put his devotion to the test, asking for food to eat. Because this devotee only had a small amount of edible rice flour and some jaggery, he combined the two in a prepared pudding and offered it to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva, pleased with his devotion, accepted it and informed the ruling king.
