Sri Penusila Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple, considered as one of Nava Narasimha Kshetras, was built based on Agama Shilpa Sastra. Lord Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy, manifested himself on a huge rock in a meditative posture. Since the Lord is located on a huge rock, the temple got the name Penusila and eventually, it became popular as Penchalakona. The Rajagopuram of the Narasimha temple is carved with fabulous images of gods and goddesses. The Lord is also known as Chatravati Narasimha Swamy and the devotees of this temple offer gold or silver umbrellas to the Lord.
Lord Vishnu incarnated as Narasimha Swamy, a Human body with Lion’s Head, in order to kill the demon Hiranyakasyapa. Even after killing him, he could not contain his anger and so he came to the forest. In order to cool him, Goddess Lakshmi came in the form of a tribal lady named ‘Chenchu Lakshmi’ and she hugged Lord Narasimha swamy at this very place. The word ‘Hug’ means ‘Penu Vesukonuta’ in Telugu language. Hence the place attained the name ‘Penusila’, which later became Penchalakona. It is believed that the Lord married Chenchu Lakshmi and eventually, turned himself into a huge rock.
