Pale Rider Plot
In the Old West, outside LaHood, California in Carbon Canyon, mining baron Coy LaHood intimidates independent prospectors and their families. Hull Barret, who is courting Sarah Wheeler, becomes a target. After an attack on the mining camp and the death of Sarah's dog, Megan, Sarah's teenage daughter, prays for help. A mysterious man on a pale horse arrives in Carbon Canyon.
When Hull goes to town, LaHood's men beat him, but the stranger fights them off. Hull invites the stranger, now called "Preacher," to dinner and notices bullet wounds on his back. The preacher reveals himself as a clergyman. LaHood's son, Joshua, tries to scare off Preacher with a giant man named Club, but Preacher defeats him.
Coy returns and unsuccessfully tries to bribe and threaten Preacher. At Preacher's suggestion, LaHood offers the miners money to evacuate. Preacher warns the miners about a corrupt marshal named Stockburn whom LaHood plans to hire. Megan expresses her love for Preacher, but he gently rejects her. Megan assumes Preacher loves Sarah. LaHood's men dam the creek, forcing the miners to work in a dry area. Megan goes to LaHood's camp and is almost assaulted by Joshua. The preacher arrives, disarms Joshua, and injures him.
