Laurence Olivier Awards

The Society of London Theatre presents the Laurence Olivier Awards, or simply the Olivier Awards, to recognise excellence in professional theatre in London at an annual presentation in the capital. The awards were formerly known as the Society of West End Theatre Awards before being changed in 1984 to honour the British actor of the same name. Individuals active in West End and other notable non-commercial theatres in London are recognised in a variety of areas, including plays, musicals, dance, opera, and affiliate theatre. Every year, a non-competitive Special Olivier Award is given out on a discretionary basis. The Olivier Awards, which are British theatre's counterpart of the BAFTA Awards, are regarded as the highest honour in the country.
