Navratri is celebrated twice a year, the first Navratri known as Chaitra Navratri is celebrated during the months of March or April. The second Navratri festival known as Sharad Navratri is celebrated in the autumn season. The festival honours Goddess Durga for defeating the demon Mahishasura in a battle. In the ancient story it says that a demon named Mahishasura was granted immortality by Lord Brahma on one condition. The condition was that he could only be defeated by a woman. After knowing no women matches his strength,     he started causing troubles in three realms: Earth, Heaven and Hell. To stop him from wreaking havoc, Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva came together and combined their mighty powers to create Goddess Durga. A 15-day long battle was fought between Goddess Durga and Mahishasur. During those fifteen days, the demon Mahishasur kept changing his shape and form in order to confuse the Goddess Durga. One day, he transformed into a Buffalo and that same day, Goddess Durga, slew him with her Trishul.
