Cheer

Cheer is a Netflix docuseries about American sports that premiered in January 2020. The six-part documentary follows the nationally rated forty-member Navarro College Bulldogs Cheer Team from Corsicana, Texas, led by coach Monica Aldama, preparing to participate in the National Cheerleading Championship, which is held yearly in Daytona Beach, Florida. The episodes focus on five individual Cheer Team members and contain parts of cheering history, such as the foundation of the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA).

As the series began, the Cheer Team had won fourteen NCA National Championships at the junior college level and five "Grand Nationals" for scoring the highest of any team in the tournament. Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas, about forty miles distant, is one of their closest competitors and also a junior college. The last episode discusses Varsity Brands, which was recently bought by Bain Capital and appears to dominate most facets of the billion-dollar competitive cheering industry, including television rights to the Daytona Beach finals. On January 12, 2022, the second season premiered.

Netflix's Cheer has returned for a second season, with many of our favorite Navarro College cheerleaders returning to participate in the upcoming National Championship, as well as some newcomers.

Monica Aldama

Monica is Navarro College's strict but fair Cheer coach, and she has emerged as a star among the show's numerous colorful characters. Monica is still coaching Navarro's cheering team and appears regularly in the current season, despite having several championship titles to her name and evident enthusiasm for the sport.

In 2020, she participated with Val Chmerkovskiy in season 29 of Dancing With the Stars. Full Out! Leadership Lessons from America's Favorite Coach, her memoir, was published in January 2022.

La'Darius Marshall

La'Darius returned to Navarro for the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 seasons, appearing in Season 2. He admitted last year that he wants to act, telling the Dallas Morning News, "I want to act so bad, and I feel like it's time for me to do that." I'm going to be a film star. It's just in my blood." He also helps in the coaching and training of cheerleaders at Cheer Athletics Pensacola in Florida.

Gabi Butler

Gabi Butler is the most prolific cheerleader featured in Netflix's series, with 1.9 million Instagram followers and no plans to slow down. However, he returned to Navarro for the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 seasons before enrolling as a student and cheerleader at Weber State University in Utah. She appears in season two of the docuseries.

"Because of COVID, they gave everyone one more year of eligibility and I watched Weber and they were just an amazing team and this year they came out with insane skills," Gabi revealed last year. "So I really was intrigued and I wanted to learn more."

She is currently a social media influencer on her many platforms.

Lexi Brumback

Despite having a rough history that includes run-ins with the law, Lexi was among the most compelling characters on Netflix's Cheer. Despite this, she rose through Navarro's cheering squad ranks to become an exceptionally accomplished gymnast. Still, she was forced to resign when she accepted responsibility for illicit substances discovered in her driving car. She returned to live with her grandma in Houston.

Fans will be relieved to know that Lexi was given a second chance, as coach Monica Aldama stated in an initial interview: "Her coach reached out to me and her mom and her grandmother; everyone wanted her back at Navarro, of course. I even said at the end of the series that I felt like that I still needed some time with her because she was doing so well. She did get into a bit of a trouble and that was all dropped."

Aldama revealed to US Weekly: "She did have to sit out in the fall semester and I felt like she had enough time to reflect on it and learn from it. She's doing great and she's really happy to be back here, and I can't wait to see where she goes from here."

Lexi returns for the 2020-2021 season and is now a part of Season 2. The social media sensation has a YouTube channel, and an Instagram account specialized in make-up

Jerry Harris

Jerry was arrested by the FBI in 2020 on child pornography allegations after being a fan favorite during season 1 of Cheer. In December, he pled not guilty to seven felony charges, including four counts of child sexual exploitation, one crime of inducement, one count of receiving child pornography, and one count of traveling to engage in illegal sexual contact with a minor. The scandal will be addressed in season 2 of Cheer, with Monica stating that Jerry wrote her a letter in the teaser.

"His letter was so optimistic. Like there was not one negative thing in this letter. He said that he hopes to one day be a motivational speaker," she said. "I want to be supportive. Yet I'm so disappointed … I have all these emotions that are just fighting each other."

Jerry is scheduled to appear in court in early 2022.

Morgan Simianer

Morgan was another member of the Navarro College squad with a traumatic history due to her childhood growing up in a trailer with just her brother. Fortunately, things improved when her grandparents gained custody of them both, and she became an essential team member.

Morgan returned to Navarro for the 2019-2020 season; however, she dropped out after competitions were suspended due to the COVID-19 epidemic that spring. Fans will be able to see her in season two. Stone Burleson is the social media influencer's boyfriend.

Mackenzie ‘Sherbs’ Sherburn

Sherbs was yet another Navarro College cheerleader whose journey to Daytona Beach did not go as planned. She was forced to withdraw after suffering a severe injury during practice. Fortunately, she has recovered completely and is currently cheerleading again for Texas Tech University. She graduated from university in August 2021 and now uses Instagram to share fitness advice.

Austin Bayles

Austin was a member of the Navarro College team featured in Cheer, who suffered an ankle injury in Daytona. He eventually joined the Texas Tech cheerleading squad, where he trained with another Cheer star Mackenzie Sherburn, affectionately nicknamed as 'Sherbs.'

Allie Ross

When Allie, one of the top flyers Monica would step in for an injury, wasn't fighting with her stuntman, La'Darius, she was defying gravity with the best of them. Allie appears to be back at Navarro, vying for her second victory.

Maddy Brum

Maddy Brum, from Massachusetts, joined the Navarro cheer squad in 2019 and was eager to compete in Daytona the following year. However, due to COVID, she was unable to perform last year. Maddy will work hard in season 2 to show herself as a cheerleader, earning her coach Monica's approval.

Gillian Rupert

Gillian joined the Navarro squad simultaneously as Maddy, and she competed in the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 Daytona championships. Season 2 sees her breaking out of her shell more. Away from Navarro College, Gilly cheers the California Wildcats, for whom she was a key player in their 2019 victory.

Brooke Morosca

Brooke is one of Navarro's most accomplished cheerleading, and she worked tirelessly during season 2 to make the Daytona Championships mat. Brooke is a cheerleading coach and cheers for Cheer Athletics and Next Level Cheerleading and her work at Navarro. She also attends the University of Tennessee.

Payton Sykes

Full of sass and very on-trend, Payton brings the sizzle at Navarro College, and he seems ready to become one of the team's most popular cheerleaders among fans. When not at Navarro, he can be found cheering with Cheer Athletics and Woodlands Elite Cheer Company, with whom he has won bronze and silver in the global championships.

Cassadee Dunlap

Cassadee is another "rookie" at Navarro who has competed in pageants such as Toddlers and Tiaras and Cheer Perfection. Some fans may be disappointed to learn that Cassadee will not be around for long. After Season 2, it is revealed that she has opted to attend the University of Central Arkansas.
