National Panda Day 2022

Every year on March 16, we honor the fluffiest, bamboo-munching bears and the national pride of China. The panda has two subspecies: the Giant, black and white panda, and the 'Qinling panda,' a much smaller, brown subspecies discovered in 1985 in the mountain ranges of China's southern Shaanxi Province. Giant pandas can only be found in the wild in China's remote mountainous regions. Pandas' status was upgraded from "endangered" to "vulnerable" in 2019 due to rapidly growing population numbers.

National Panda Day History

Though the origins of this holiday are unknown, we can assume that it was created to raise awareness about the beauty of pandas in order to prevent them from becoming extinct. The World Wide Fund for Nature was founded in 1961, and its logo is based on the Panda because it is "an animal that is beautiful, endangered, and loved by many people around the world," according to Sir Peter Scott, one of the WWF's first founders. Pandas are considered "vulnerable" to extinction in 2020 due to zoo reproduction efforts, reforestation, and conservation campaigns. Though they are no longer on the verge of extinction, it is critical to preserve panda habitat because the giant panda plays an important role in our natural ecosystem.

National Panda Day Significance

1) They serve as a global symbol of peace and friendship

Giant pandas exchanged to American and Japanese zoos in the 1970s were among the first cultural gifts exchanged between China and the West. This is known as "panda diplomacy." Pandas are still considered honored guests in China, and some people believe they bring good luck.

2) They Take a Relaxed Nap After Their Meal

Though pandas are normally shy and antisocial with humans, they enjoy cuddling and napping for hours after a meal. It's impossible not to adore these fluffy, tuxedo-clad mammals, both in the wild and in zoos.

3) It is Simply Why Not?

Why there cannot be a day for the cutest creature of the world when there are days for many.
