Origin of Jitiya Vrat

The prince of Gandharva was Jimutavahana. To protect the Naga dynasty, he happily agreed to be the food for the bird king called Garuda. He also saved the life of a serpent Shankhchud using his courage and benevolence. Pakshiraj Garuda was amazed by this act of Gandharva. So he promised not to eat any of the snakes from his dynasty anymore. He also gave life back to Jimutavahana. By this act, Jimutavahana protected the whole dynasty. After this incident, every year, Jitiya Vrat or Jivitputrika Vrat was celebrated on the Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha of Ashwin month. There are certain methods to worship the Gandharva prince Jimutvahana on this very day. The fasting that the mothers keep on this day will make their sons' life prosper is the belief of the people in India.

Another story related to Jitiya Vrat: Ashwatthama was very angry after he came to know that his father died in the Mahabharatam war, so to avenge his father, he came to the Pandavas’ camp and killed five people in their sleep. He thought he killed the five pandavas but instead he killed all the sons of Draupadi. Furious Pandavas captured Ashwatthama. ANd Arjuna took the divine gem from him. To take revenge on Arjuna, he used his Brahmastra on Uthara’s womb in order to kill the child inside it. As the child inside Uthara is very much important for Pandavas’ dynasty, Lord Krishna revived the child inside the womb itself and the child was named Jivitputrika. Since the child died and was reborn again in the womb, that day was celebrated as Jitiya Vrat and it is believed that those mothers who fast on this day will make their sons’ life healthy and long.
