He was also staff qualified and achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel on June 30, 1980. In 1980, he was awarded the Queen's Commendation for Bravery in Zimbabwe.

He was the Commanding Officer of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment from 1981 to 1983, where he played a crucial role during the Hyde Park and Regent's Park bombings, leading to the rescue of the famous horse, Sefton. He was also the Colonel Commanding the Household Cavalry and Silver Stick to Queen Elizabeth II from 1987 to 1990. In 1990, he was promoted to the rank of brigadier and was the director of the Royal Army Veterinary Corps from 1991 to 1994. He retired in 1994 after a decorated military career.
