Intense Lockdown in Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Government on Monday announces Intense Lockdown in Chennai. Intense lockdown in and parts of Chennai of three neighbouring districts for 12 days, begins on June 19, 2020. Intense Lockdown in Chennai

On Monday, TN CM Edappadi K Palaniswami declared an Intense lockdown in and parts of Chennai of three neighbouring districts for 12 days, beginning on 19 June. Some relaxations were, however, issued. The announcement comes after CM and cabinet meeting with health experts.

Considering the spread of the virus, and based on medical and health experts' recommendations, intense lockdown will be in effect from 19 June at 00:00 (12pm) and 30 June at midnight," Palaniswami said in a statement. The intense lockdown will be in place in the panchayats of Greater Chennai Police, Tiruvallur Municipality, Gummidipoondi, Ponneri, and Minjur town, and all the panchayats of the panchayat unions of Poonamallee, Ekkadu, and Cholavaram. 

Chengalpet and the municipalities of Maraimalai Nagar, Nandivaram Guduvanchery town panchayats, and all the Kattankulathur panchayat unions in Chengalpet. Areas of Greater Chennai Police borders falling even in Kancheepuram district will be under intense lockdown, said the CM.

When are the Full Lockdowns to take place?

Full lockdowns are to take place on 21 and 28 June (Sundays). Except for milk supplies, hospitals, pharmacies, ambulance services, emergency, and funeral hearse vans, no other activities will be allowed on these two days.

What are the relaxations announced by TN CM?

The chief minister has announced certain relaxations for some essential services. These include hospitals, labs, pharmacies, ambulances, and hearse funeral vans. Rental Auto, taxi, and private vehicles are not allowed. They will however, be permitted for emergency medical services. Revenue and disaster management, electricity, treasuries, Aavin, local authorities, water supply, labour, co-operation, food, and consumer protection departments will remain open to adequate staff.

Banks are allowed to work on June 29 and 30 with 33 percent strength. ATMs and the associated research and transportation will continue as normal, however. PDS outlets will remain open from 8 am until 2 pm. Godowns and transport of goods are allowed from India's Food Corporation and TN Civil Supplies Company.

Amma canteens are allowed as well as community kitchens run by local bodies. Voluntary organisations and others could work after the government officials obtained the necessary permission.

During these 12 days of intense lockdown, construction activities are allowed to avail in-situ workers. Vegetables, grocery stores, and fuel pumps are allowed from 6 am to 2 pm. Similarly, between 6 am, and 2pm mobile, vegetable, and fruit shops are allowed. During this intense lockdown, there's no ban on freight transport and vehicles transporting essential commodities.
 

Industrial workers:

Chennai Police Limit Industrial Workers are allowed to stay and work in the units or adjacent sites for 12 days after RT-PCR tests. Similarly, employees of the Greater Chennai Police Limits who move to other areas will be subjected to RT-PCR testing and will be allowed to stay and work in the industries or neighbouring Sites.


Will E-pass be issued to travel?

The e-pass will only be issued to travel to other districts for marriage, medical and death purposes, but with the required documentation. The current rules for trains, flights, and international flights and ships will remain.

Will there be relaxations for Containment Zones?

It will not allow any activities in the containment zones. Monitoring will be stepped up during intense lockdown. Local authorities must ensure vital supplies are distributed in containment areas and quarantined homes. In these areas, the disinfectants will be sprayed twice a day, said CM Palaniswami.
