• Los Angeles, California -  The Watts Towers Arts Center in Los Angeles was designed by Italian-American artist Sabato "Simon" Rodia and consists of 17 connected sculpture towers. Rodia spent 33 years building the towers, constructing the spires and mosaics on the site out of rods, steel pipes, wire mesh, ceramic tiles, glass, porcelain, and cement in addition to other things like seashells, scrap metal, bottles, and even bed frames. Many of these items came from his long-running studio, Malibu Pottery, but neighbourhood kids were also rumoured to bring him supplies to finish his masterpiece. Rodia used only hand tools and window-washing equipment to build his towers, which he dubbed "Nuestro Pueblo," or "Our Town," in his artwork. The towers were finished in 1954 and have received the National Historic Landmark designation.
