The St. Paul Capitals Hockey Association (SPCHA) declared that one of their young ice hockey players died unexpectedly over Christmas at 16 after a stroke on December 6. An angiogram revealed the 16-year-old had a rare condition called Moyamoya disease. After suffering from a sequence of strokes, Cormick Scanlan passed away encircled by his family, the St. Paul Capitals Hockey Association reported on Twitter.

Bypass surgery is planned for Thursday the 15th to repair the left side carotid artery with blood vessels from his head. Surgery is to eradicate the chances of a stroke recurring. A teenage hockey player died on Christmas Day after a stroke in early December. The St. Paul Capitals are grieving the loss of former player Cormick Scanlan. The team's website says the teen died just days after suffering a stroke on Christmas Day.

According to a tribute posted by the school on Tuesday, Scanlan was a sophomore at Cretin-Derham Hall in St. Paul, where he played football, basketball, and hockey. He was 16 years old. The hockey club said Cormick had a stroke before this month. Cormick Scanlan has been a part of the Capitals association since he was a mini-mite. He has spent the last two seasons participating in the games played by our bantam AAA squad. Cormick played in Peewee B1 in the year that his hallmark movement was called the "choo choo."
