Guru Ramdas ji was born in 1534 in Lahore, his parents' names are Bhai Hari Das ji and Mata Anup Devi Ji. His original name was Jetha and he was called Bhai Jetha ji. Parkash Gurpurab of Shri Guru Ramdas ji is celebrated each year on Kattak Vadi 2. In the year 2021, Guru Ramdas ji's birthday or simply the date of Parkash Purab of Guru Ramdas ji is celebrated on 22nd October 2021, Friday. It is celebrated grandly at the Shri Harmandir Sahib also known as the Golden Temple, located in Amritsar. Sikh people come from various cities to Amritsar to join the gurpurab celebrations with respect and devotion. Devotees bathe in the holy sarovar situated inside the premises of Golden Temple, and they pray and seek blessings of Guru ji on this auspicious day.
Guru Ramdas Ji History
Guru Ramdas Ji was the founder of Amritsar city which was originally called Ramdaspur and he built many ponds such as the famous sarovar at Shri Harmandir Sahib. The Amritsar city got its name from this pond and the meaning of the word Amritsar is Pond of Nectar. Ramdas was orphaned at age 7 and he spent his childhood days at his maternal grandmother's house. At age 12, Ramdas and his grandmother moved to Goindwal, and they met Guru Amar Das. Ramdas accepted Guru Amar Das as his mentor and also served him. Bhai Jetha married the daughter of Guru Amar Das and he became part of Amar Das family. Amar Das chose Bhai Jetha as his successor instead of his two sons and also gave Jetha a new name as Ram Das which translates to servant of god.
Guru Ram Das Ji became the Guru of Sikhism in the year 1574. He expanded the manji organization for clerical appointments and donation collections. Later, Ram Das Ji selected his youngest son, Arjan as his next successor. This led to some dispute between his eldest and the youngest sons. The first four Gurus were not related but from the fifth through tenth Sikh Gurus were considered to be the direct descendants of Ram Das. Ram Das also represented Guru Amar Das in the Mughal court before becoming Guru. Eventually, Guru Ram Das died on 1st September 1581, in Punjab.
