The department said Tuesday that a Grand Prairie police officer was killed in a crash on Monday night when he tried to stop a car with a fake paper license plate already used on more than 200 vehicles.

Officer Brandon Tsai, noticed the car at about 10:45 p.m. near Southwest 3rd Street and Pioneer Parkway, police said. He called for backup, pursued the vehicle in a 5-to-6-mile chase, and looped onto President service road. Tsai collided with a squad car near Dickey Road, police Chief Daniel Scesney said on Tuesday at a news conference the vehicle rolled and crashed into a pole.

It has paint/cosmetic damage to the upper rear passenger side post and next to the rear windshield; a rectangular object or reflector raised on the right rear passenger side, near the bumper seam; tinted windows, and likely has a temporary fictitious license plate.

According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, Tsai was the fifth Grand Prairie police officer who died when Tsai his in the line of duty, and he tracks police deaths across the country. The recent Grand Prairie officer death was Andrew Robert MacDonald, who died last year after a struggle with COVID-19. 

Also, In 2019, Officer Albert Ramirez Castaneda Jr., Sgt. Gregory Lei Hunter in 2004, and Officer Lyndon Fred King in 1982. The department has not announced any funeral arrangements for Tsai. However, a candlelight vigil is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday outside the police station.
