Delhi Factory Fire
In the early morning of December 8, 2019, a fire broke out on the 600 sq ft (56 m2) site of a baggage bag manufacturing plant in the Anaj Mandi district of Central Delhi. The fire erupted at a workshop where school bags and shoes were manufactured. The Delhi Fire Service (DFS) got a call for assistance at 5:22 a.m. IST and arrived within five minutes, however the intensity of the fire and blockages to the access ports stopped them from entering the structure. The iron grilles had to be removed with gas cutters. Thirty-five fire engines arrived at the scene and put out the fire, aided by an estimated 150 firefighters who were able to save 63 persons. A National Disaster Response Force team was dispatched to assist the fire department with the rescue efforts.
According to the authorities, the majority of those killed were industrial workers who were sleeping inside. According to doctors, the deaths were caused by asphyxiation from smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning. The fire's cause is being investigated. An electrical short circuit may have been the cause, according to early investigation and eye witness claims.
