Chidambaram Temple Timings

The temple was built in the 10th century, at that time Chidambaram was the capital of the Chola dynasty. A Shiva shrine is located at the site when the town was called Thillai. All 108 Karanas of Natya Shastra by Bharata Muni were drawn on the walls of the Chidambaram temple. Indian classical dance, Bharatanatyam originated from their carvings. Lord Shiva as Nataraja is the main deity of the Chidambaram temple, it represents major themes like Shaktism, Vaishnavism, and other aspects of Hinduism. Shiva is shown as the Nataraja performing the Ananda Tandava located in the golden hall of the shrine Pon Ambalam. It also acts as a stage for the annual Natyanjali dance festival on Maha Shivaratri.
