Choose a digit from the grid below. Select a new number now. The number needs to be in a different row and column. You could not choose a number in the same row (9, 11, or 12) or the same column if you chose 10 (third row, second column) (2, 6, 14). The numbers that are disallowed should maybe be crossed out.

Choose the third number in a different column and row from the first two.

Choose the fourth number, making sure it is not in the same row or column as any previous three.

Now add the four numbers together for me.

How does this trick work?
