Bhadrapada Poornima Significance

Bhadrapada Poornima is observed on the full moon day (Poornima) of September or October every year. Hindus give a lot of importance to this festival and are observed with great reverence and sanctity. Bhadrapada Purnima is observed with great devotion by the devotees by taking a vow (vrat) and is celebrated with immense gaiety and fervour all across India. On this day, all Vishnu temples across the country, especially in the state of Gujarat, are decorated and  the Satyanarayana, another form of Lord Vishnu is worshipped. Special festivities and pooja rituals are observed on Bhadrapada Poornima day in the temple of Ambaji, in Gujarat.  Bhadra Poornima day is also significant because, on the same day, Uma-Maheshwar Fast is also observed, and Pitru Paksha, popularly known as Shraddha, commences and ends on Ashwin Amavasya. It is also believed that as per Bhavishya Purana, Uma-Maheshwar Vrat is observed on the third day (Tritiya) in Shukla Paksha of Margashirsha month. But as per Narada Purana, the fast is observed on Purnima of Bhadrapada. Women observe with great faith the Uma-Maheshwar Vrat to be blessed with intelligent children and a bright future.

Rituals of Bhadrapada Poornima

It is widely believed that by worshipping Lord Satyanarayana another form of Lord Vishnu on Bhadrapada Purnima, the pains and sufferings of the devotee ends, and their life is filled with joy and prosperity. On Bhadrapada Poornima, the devotee has to wake up early morning and have a bath and pray to Lord Vishnu. The idol of Lord Vishnu is given a Panchamrit snan (sacred bath) with a mix of milk, sugar, honey, and ghee. Pooja offerings with flowers and fruits are performed on the idol. Most of the temples celebrate this festival with recitals of Vishnu Purana and chanting of Vishnu mantra. The devotee has to start fasting from the previous day of bhadrapada purnima day that is after sunset, take a bath early morning the next day, and should live only on fruits and milk. On this day, donating clothes and food to Brahmins and to the needy is considered rewarding. Mrityunjaya Homam is also done on this day to remove all the negativity and obstacles in one’s life and to lead a peaceful and content life. Uma maheshwar vrat is also observed on this day. On this day, women worship the god and goddess with utmost devotion and reverence by placing Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati idol in a sacred place. Pooja offerings are performed with the lighting of lamps; the idol is decorated with flowers and fruits and sweets are kept as Prasad after worshipping with recital of chants and mantra.
