A variety of dishes are also prepared which are made from rice and fed to them.  Even in astrology, Lord Ganesha has been called the lord of Chaturthi. On this day, after bathing in the morning, one should retire from the routine and wear a pure or new garment (cloth). By observing the fast, it is believed that one is relieved from all the sickness and trouble.

Story behind Bahula Chaturthi

There is a reason why people observe fast on Bahula Chaturthi. Bahula Chathurthi Vrat Katha holds great importance and is observed in the state of Gujarat.

There was a cow named Bahula who was on her way back to feed the calf. On the way back, Bahula encountered a lion. Bahula was extremely panicky, but courageously bahula tells that lion that she needs to feed her calf. She even says she will come back to the lion once she feeds her calf so that the lion can eat her up. The lion let her go, and waited for her.
To the lion's shock, Bahula reached back to the lion as promised. Lion didn’t expect her to come back to him. He was quite impressed seeing the cows commitment towards the child and let her go free. This shows that the physical strength, anger and passion of the lion, too, had to bow to the care and love of the cow towards its calf. From that particular day, devotees sacrifice cow's milk and save it for calves only and celebrate Bahula Chaturthi. It is a symbol of worship that is performed to get blessings from the gods.
