His last episode was titled "Bently," in this episode, Chester will leave Dodge City to find a murderer following a deathbed confession. Dennis said that he had done the show for 9 years. He just felt that if he didn't get away from the guy, he pretty much exhausted all creative possibilities with the character. He just wanted to do something else. He added that he felt that it was time to move on and knew that was very risky to do because many actors did the same thing and disappeared.

As mentioned before, the actor left the series to pursue other opportunities. Then Dennis followed up his break with a starring role on NBC's Kentucky Jones. He said that he got into the business of playing a leading man and had more say-so about whether the show was a success or not. The series did not last long, and the actor again found his footing with the police drama McCloud. In that drama, he played the title role of Deputy Marshal Sam McCloud. The New Mexico-set thriller aired from 1970 to 1977. Dennis died of complications from prostate cancer on February 24, 2006, at the age of 81.
