What Happened To Adrienne Shelly?
Adrienne Shelly, one of the most recognisable faces of 1990s independent cinema, was throwing a party for her three-year-old daughter on Halloween night in 2006. Shelly was both excited and nervous as she awaited word that her latest film, Waitress, the film which she wrote, starred in, and directed, had been selected for the Sundance Film Festival. This invitation would propel her to the next level as a director. Her husband, Andy Ostroy, discovered her hanging from a sheet in the bathroom of her tiny office in New York's West Village, where she would go to work. The media quickly picked up the news.
The New York Post reported: "Indie film star 'suicide' stunner – hubby finds gal, 40, hanged in Village apt."
When Ostroy called the police to inquire about the status of the investigation, he was informed that no one was working on Shelly's case.
How Did Arienne Shelly Die?
Ostroy, her husband, was convinced that Shelly had not committed suicide because she had a daughter she adored and was on the verge of realising her dream. "She was the happiest I'd ever seen her," he says in Adrienne, a new documentary by HBO Max. Ostroy provides an intimate portrait of Adrienne Shelly, what happened the day of her death, and how the tragedy affected the family through a mix of family recordings, interviews with friends like actor Paul Rudd, and simple animations. But, above all, it is a devastating statement about how quickly life can change.
The invitation was received from the Sundance Film Festival to screen Waitress arrived on the same day that police apprehended Shelly's murderer, Diego Pilco, an undocumented 19-year-old Ecuadorian who had been working on the building's construction. According to his first confession, Shelly complained about the noise, and he pushed her, and she fell against a table, fearing she would call the cops and he would be deported. The killer attempted to cover up the crime as a suicide, believing she was dead.
Who Killed Adrienne Shelly?
The truth of Shelly's death was that Pilco had entered her apartment to steal from her, and when she saw him going through her stuff, she tried to stop him, and he strangled her and later hung her in the bathroom to cover it up.
Diego Pilco, the murderer, admitted it to Ostroy in 2019 when the widower visited him in prison "to humanise Adrienne for him so that instead of having a lasting image in his head of this panicked woman calling out for the police, he sees a mother, a wife, a daughter, a sister." That he understood all the moments in the last 14 years that Adrienne, Sophie, I, and everyone else missed," Ostroy told The Guardian in December.
