As the investigation went forward, they began to identify specific individuals as the suspects. Santa was supposedly killed with the candy cane's sharp end, which had purportedly been licked until it was razor-sharp (as strange as that sounds, you must see the movie to understand).

One of the high points of the movie was the covert operation that happened just before things became nasty. Pete Davison, a trainee who had nothing to do with the case but was requested to pick the murderer, joined the group after the comedic covert operation had failed to provide results (another absurd and offbeat move from the special).

By the time the inquiry was over, Jim Trentley, Mia Briggs, and Donna Foccacia had all been identified as suspects. Maya Rudolph, Jason Bateman, and Pete Davidson all did ridiculous things after being asked to give a gift to the person they believe is responsible.

Maya gives the Mayor her present while also indicating that she thinks he killed Santa. With his present on the body, Jason Bateman claimed the death was a suicide. Then Pete Davidson gave Terry his gift, which led to chaos and escalating tensions.

After much controversy, Jim Trentley finally confessed to killing Johnny Blaze, the Santa, that evening. Terry also discovered that the girl wrapping the gifts was Angie with only a few minutes left before the eagerly anticipated gift delivery. Both were detained and arrested, protecting the mayor's image and the orphans' Christmas.

The movie ended on a funny note when Terry Seattle stole a present intended for an orphan, thinking it was dedicated to him.
