Johnson chose not to receive chemotherapy after receiving a late-stage pancreatic cancer diagnosis in 2013. He was informed that year that he only had nine to ten months to live. Nevertheless, he collaborated with Roger Daltrey of the Who to make the album Going Back Home in 2014. After a significant procedure to remove a three-kilogram tumor, he stated later that year that he was cancer-free.
