The Hollywood sign is basically for advertisement purposes for real estate. The developers S. H. Woodruff and Tracy E. Shoults started developing a new neighborhood called “Hollywoodland.” The sign was originally meant to act as a huge billboard inorder to draw new house buyers to the hillside. Thomas Fisk Goff was the artist who created the Hollywood sign, and he was born in London in the year 1890. He immigrated to Los Angeles in the early 1920’s and thus opened a Crescent Sign Company. Developers Woodruff and Shoults hired Goff to create and install the Hollywood sign. Goff was also an artist who painted landscapes on canvas. Each letter in the Hollywood sign was 30 ft (9.1 m) wide and 50 ft (15.2 m) high. The whole sign was decorated with around 4,000 light bulbs to attract attention. There was a searchlight located below the Hollywood sign. The project cost around $21,000, which is equivalent to $320,000 in 2020.
