According to police, the Southern California triple homicide suspect who was killed in a gunfight with them on Friday is thought to have driven across the country to meet a teenage girl before killing three members of her family. Before leaving with the daughter, Austin Lee Edwards, 28, most certainly set fire to the family's home in Riverside, California. Later that day, after finding Edwards with the teen, deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department executed him, according to the authorities.

Authorities in California reported that Edwards, 28, had previously worked for the state police and a sheriff's office in Virginia. According to the Riverside Police Department, Edwards, a resident of North Chesterfield, Virginia, met the girl online and used "catfishing," or pretending to be someone else, to get her personal information.

On Saturday, Nov. 26, mourners gathered at the crime scene to hold a candlelit memorial after a mother, father, and daughter were discovered dead inside their burning Riverside house. The victims were named as Mark and Sharie Winek, a married couple and grandparents who lived in the 11261 Price Courthouse that was discovered on fire on the morning of Friday, Nov. 25. The Wineks' adult daughter Brooke, who is also a single mother, was the third victim found there.
