It consists of a total of 12,500 episodes. The Young and the Restless is focused on two prominent families: the wealthy Brooks family and the working-class Foster family. After a sequence of recasts and withdrawals in the early 1980s, all the original characters were written out except for Jill Foster Abbott. Bell replaced them with new prominent families, the Abbotts and Williams. Over time, other families were introduced, such as the Newman family, the Barber/Winters family, and the Baldwin Fishers. Despite these changes, one of its most lasting storylines was the four-decade-long feud between Jill Abbott and Catherine Chancellor, the longest-running rivalry of any American soap opera.
