Sarma Melngailis was born on  September 10, 1972. She is the former owner and co-founder of New York City vegan raw food restaurants Pure Food and Wine and One Lucky Duck. Both businesses were forced to close in 2015 after employees staged a walkout over unpaid wages. Melngailis was arrested in 2016 and convicted of fraud in 2017. Melngailis was born in Latvia and raised in Newton, Massachusetts, where he graduated from Newton North High School. Her mother, a professional chef, inspired her early interest in food. Her father, John, was an MIT physicist.  Melngailis earned a B.S. in Economics from the Wharton School and an additional B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1994. She relocated to New York City and worked for Bear Stearns until 1996.

Sarma Melngailis was found guilty and was serving 4 months of prison at  notorious Rikers Island. Pure Food and Wine, a high-end restaurant, opened in 2004 with famed American chef Matthew Kenney and investor Jeffrey Chodorow. Despite his criminal history, Strangis was able to persuade Melngailis that he worked in black ops and, as a result, had to keep the small details of his life hidden for a long time. According to the official indictment, the suspects are accused of transferring more than $1.6 million from business accounts to Melngailis' personal bank account, spending $80,000 at specialty watch retailers, more than $70,000 at hotels in Europe and New York, and more than $10,000 on Uber car rides.Melngailis was unable to pay her employees due to dwindling restaurant funds and had transferred thousands of dollars from the business accounts to her personal account.Melngailis and Strangis then fled for ten months while facing charges of second-degree grand larceny, second-degree criminal tax fraud, and first-degree scheme to defraud. This happened for the second time in the year and she had to face the prison life as the result of this.

Melngailis is currently living outside in New York with her dog, Leon. She is also working on her memoir and hinted on her Instagram page in February 2022 that she was recording a podcast. "My set up on the floor in the quietest corner I could find while away from home to do one podcast, the only one I felt made sense for now," she wrote alongside a photo of herself. Melngailis took to Instagram ahead of the Netflix premiere of Bad Vegan to announce that she would be disappearing for a while.
