In 2004, Jan released a book that details her relationship with Robert Berchtold, to his dismay. Later, Jan claimed and alleged their relationship was purely platonic. Finally, though, he admits his relationship with a pre-teen girl. Robert was found guilty of assault but committed suicide shortly before sentencing on November 11, 2005.
Robert attributed his crimes to mental illness. Although Robert was never pointed out for his crimes by court, he found himself in trouble after he showed up at a stop on Jan's book tour and hit a member of her security team with a minivan.

Robert "I was delighted at the time because my stepfather finally liked me, and everything was good. Later, I reverted to taking care of a little girl," he told ABC. In "Abducted in Plain Sight," Robert's brother said, "Bob had gone to court that day and been found guilty."
"He says, 'If it's one day in prison, it will kill me. I'm not going there.'"
But unfortunately, Robert was later found guilty of assault but committed suicide shortly before sentencing. As a result, viewers can now stream Episodes 1 through 4 of A Friend of the Family on Peacock. New episodes drop every Thursday at 12 a.m. EST.
