Berchtold deceives the Broberg family time again. Robert kidnaps their daughter, not once but twice, and even has an affair with Robert and Mary Ann Broberg. But what happened to the real-life Berchtold after the events portrayed in "A Friend of The Family"?

Berchtold had allegedly charmed his way into a comfortable position with the Family. The children in the clan considered Berchtold as a second father, and when Berchtold fled to Mexico with a 12-year-old Jan, the Family was initially unwilling to consider it a kidnapping.

According to ABC News, Berchtold was later found guilty of assault, disorderly, and criminal trespassing conduct after getting into an altercation with a demonstrator who was protesting his appearance at Jan's events. Fearing prison and rejected by his obsession, Berchtold later died by suicide in November 2005, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, just before he was sentenced.

A Friend Of The Family: What Happened To Kidnapper Robert Berchtold

Past episodes of A Friend of the Family will cover one of the most astonishing facts about this case: that Jan Broberg was kidnapped twice by Robert Berchtold within two years. After the first time of kidnapping, her parents were completely unaware of the sexual abuse. Berchtold made it clear to Jan that she couldn't talk about their sexual encounters to anyone since she trusted him.

After a year of intense grooming, Jan started to gain romantic feelings toward Berchtold. Later, Berchtold convinced Jan to leave and come with him, and the second kidnapping happened. He drove her to California and enrolled her in an all-girls Catholic school claiming she was his daughter. She had been missing for several months, and he could trick her parents into believing he wasn't aware of her whereabouts.

Jan Broberg is the executive producer of the Peacock miniseries based on her life, A Friend Of The Family. She endured some of the worst possible psychological manipulations during her childhood. After the chaos of the events, Jan shared her story at various events and warned people of the dangers to others, even those who seemed entirely trustworthy. She continues spreading awareness of Berchtold's crimes through the new drama series. Berchtold was later found guilty of assault and committed suicide.
