He admitted before the surgery that he would be out of action for a while due to the recovery time, but he is determined to be back playing football as soon as he is able.

Why Ozil Retired From International Football?

The Arsenal attacker has ended his international career after being blamed for his country's poor World Cup performance.

Just days after Germany was humiliated at the World Cup, DFB president Reinhard Grindel demanded a public statement from Mesut Ozil regarding the Arsenal star's pre-tournament meeting with Turkey president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Grindel got exactly what he asked for on Sunday. But it was not what he had hoped for or expected from the 93-time Germany international.

Ozil meticulously detailed his account of his meeting with Erdogan, the media criticism that followed, and then launched a scathing attack on Grindel and his supporters before confirming his international retirement in a lengthy three-part statement released section by section throughout the day.

The statement was strong, thoughtful, and demonstrated why the 29-year-old took so long to respond to his treatment following Germany's World Cup exit. Germany had failed to advance from their group at the tournament for the first time in 80 years, but instead of blaming head coach Joachim Low or reflecting on what the DFB could have done better before and during the competition, Ozil was made a scapegoat by not only the media, but also people within his own football association, including general manager Oliver Bierhoff and Grindel.

Why Is Ozil Not Playing For Germany?

Mesut zil's international career ended in acrimony rather than adulation, despite being a defining figure in one of Germany's most successful generations. Since then, the World Cup winner has remained silent on the situation — until now.

In an interview with The Athletic, the World Cup winner defended his controversial photo with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and opened up about his decision for the first time since his explosive and strongly worded retirement announcement.

"With time to reflect, I know it was the right decision," the 31-year-old said. "It was a very difficult period for me as I played nine years for Germany and was one of their most successful players. I won the World Cup and more, played a lot of games — a lot of them really good — and gave everything

For many years, Zil's name was among the first, if not the first, on Germany's team sheet. However, the German Fußball Bund left the midfielder feeling "disrespected and unprotected" following an ill-advised photo with Erdogan in the run-up to the disastrous 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia (DFB).

"I was receiving racist abuse - even from politicians and public figures - yet nobody from the national team came out at that time and said, 'Hey, stop. This is our player, you can't insult him like that'. Everyone just kept quiet and let it happen."

For the Russian fans, he refers to comments he made as he walked off the field, such as "Go back to your country," "F—- yourself," and "Turkish pig." It was the same treatment that teammate Ilkay Gündogan received in a pre-tournament friendly in Leverkusen, who was also in the infamous photo with Erdogan.
