Schoolgirls Jessica Chapman and Holly Wells were missing after a family barbecue in 2002. Their disappearance shocked the people in their homes. Later it was identified that the school caretaker Ian Huntley, had lured them back to his home and killed them. Ian Huntley received two life sentences for their murders. The bodies of the two girls were found two weeks later in woodland after Ian Huntley tried to hide his crimes. He said to police that Maxine Carr had been in the house with him at the time of their disappearance, but she was actually in Grimsby visiting relatives. Max Carr was the girlfriend of Ian Huntley.

Maxine Carr was jailed for three-and-a-half years for distorting the course of justice. Maxine Carr worked as a teaching assistant for Jessica Chapman and Holly Wells's class in primary school. Maxine Carr served just 21 months behind bars. Moreover, she was given lifelong anonymity upon her release in May 2004. Since Maxine's release from prison in 2004, taxpayer costs have been around £2.5million to provide Carr with a new identity and police protection.
