Marilyn Monroe

According to Smithsonian Magazine, Marilyn Monroe was born on June 1, 1926, in Los Angeles. Norma Jean Mortensen was her given name. Monroe's mother had paranoid schizophrenia and financial hardship, and her father was absent, so she moved around between foster homes and guardians until she married Jim Dougherty, a 21-year-old, at 16.

When she was 18, a photographer spotted her working in a munitions factory, and she began modelling. Her marriage disintegrated amid her rising stardom. In 1946, she was offered a screen test by 20th Century Fox. She had minor roles as femme Fatales and mistresses before landing her big break as the lead in classic films like How to Marry a Millionaire and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, both of which debuted in 1953.

What Happened To Marilyn Monroe?

According to the Los Angeles Times, Marilyn Monroe died from an overdose of sedative drugs in her Brentwood home on August 4, 1962. The 36-year-old had called her psychiatrist the day before, complaining about her inability to sleep. Around 3 a.m., her housekeeper noticed the actress' bedroom light was turned on. When Monroe didn't respond to the knocks on her bedroom door, the housekeeper called Monroe's psychiatrist, who smashed a window and climbed in, finding Monroe unresponsive, her psychiatrist summoned the doctor who had prescribed Monroe the sleeping pills, who arrived and pronounced Monroe dead.

Her death made international headlines. "Marilyn Monroe, a troubled beauty who failed to find happiness as Hollywood's brightest star, was discovered dead in her Brentwood home Sunday of an apparent overdose of sleeping pills," the Los Angeles Times obituary read. "One of the problems with this whole case is that there are so many conflicting stories," Spada said about her death. Michael Salesman, who worked for Marilyn's publicist, told People, "No one knows the truth. No one will ever know the truth."

Marilyn Monroe The Whole Story

Marilyn Monroe married her first husband, factory worker James Dougherty when she was 16 years old in 1942. This was before she began her modelling career, leading to opportunities in Hollywood. She began modelling while her husband was serving in the military during WWII. This drew the attention of Hollywood studios, and she eventually landed a six-month contract with 20th Century Fox. She divorced Dougherty in 1946 after he expressed dissatisfaction with her profession.

Interest in her personal life waned as her career progressed. Marilyn was linked to several men in the early 1950s before falling in love with ex-baseball player Joe DiMaggio. In 1954, she married him. However, DiMaggio was never a fan of her being used as a sex symbol, and he reached a breaking point when the publicity for the film The Seven Year Itch was based on the now-iconic image of her standing over a subway grill in New York City. This enraged the jealous and allegedly abusive DiMaggio, and their marriage ended nine months later.

Marilyn became reliant on barbiturates and alcohol in the 1950s, crippled by stage fright, low self-esteem, and a lack of agency. She worked hard to overcome her screen persona as a dumb blonde to be taken more seriously as an actor. She moved to New York for classes and began a serious relationship with playwright Arthur Miller. Her addiction was worsening. She reportedly miscarried in 1957 and was hospitalised for a barbiturate overdose at the same time. Her marriage failed, and she divorced Miller in 1961. She sang Happy Birthday to then-President John F. Kennedy a year later.

Marilyn Monroe's Marriage

Marilyn Monroe's marriage to Miller ended in divorce in 1961. However, she sang Happy Birthday to then-President John F. Kennedy a year later. The event, which occurred only three months before her death, produced the only known photograph of the two of them together, despite rumours of their entanglement persisting. She was said to have had an extramarital affair with the president's brother, Bobby Kennedy. "It was pretty clear that Marilyn had sexual relations with both Bobby and Jack," one of her biographers, James Spada, told People in 2012.

Despite her brief career, Monroe appeared in 29 films. He even started her own production company to gain more control over her roles and salary when women in Hollywood were yielding to the demands of the film industry's overwhelming number of men in charge.
