Thomas' husband Marion passed away after spending five weeks in the intensive care unit (ICU) fighting a bacterial infection that caused his organs to fail. He was hospitalised because of issues with multiple organ systems unrelated to Covid-19 and unrelated to his stroke from 18 months earlier.

Even a few weeks after Michael's stroke in May 2019, Bobbie was candid about Michael's health difficulties up to his dying. She even wrote a column for Today about National Stroke Awareness Month that month. Sadly, Michael wound up in the hospital in late 2020 and passed away on December 1 of that year. She explained that Michael had spent six weeks in the hospital after his stroke but was already hard at work on his recovery. In her statement, Bobbie claimed that Michael's most recent hospitalization was "different from his stroke of 18 months ago" and was "caused by difficulties involving numerous organ systems."

The 15-year "Today" style editor reunited with hosts Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager on Thursday and gave an update on her life since her spouse passed away in December 2020 at the age of 42. She cited Kimberly Schlapman from the band Little Big Town as one of the "so many nice people" who had been in touch with her. Steven Roads, Schlapman's first spouse, passed away in 2005 after having a heart attack.
