Following Reeves' disappearance in April 2006, suspicion quickly fell on Samson Shelton, a 26-year-old teacher from a school. His phone number was in Reeves' cellphone, and she'd informed people that the two were dating. Shelton first denied any knowledge about Reeves' presence and said their friendship was just that. According to a 2017 investigation that spoke to both Reeves and investigators involved in the case, a different story quickly emerged.

Shelton celebrated his successful assassination of Reeves by going out on the town. According to CBS News, he was caught on video line dancing at a local country music club that evening. Shelton, who had been Reeves' middle school teacher, groomed and exploited the high school junior when she tried to get out of the toxic relationship.

When Reeves refused to arrive home before her 10 p.m. curfew, law authorities soon honed in on Shelton. He was admitted after a 12-hour interrogation by police. Eventually, a judge would make a video of the interrogation available. Shelton said he choked Reeves after she declined to get out of his car after a dispute. He allegedly assaulted her when she attempted to terminate the abusive relationship.  Shelton told cops that he was shocked after hearing Reeves' neck pop and tried to cover up the murder. He then took her into the woods, where he attempted to hide what he imagined was her corpse. In the end, he led authorities to where he had left her and where she had miraculously survived beyond all chances.

Shelton tried to commit suicide by taking a purposeful overdose of antidepressants while at his mother's house after being released on bail and awaiting trial.  Shelton allegedly became aggressive when medics and sheriff's deputies came to assist him, spitting on a deputy and kicking hospital employees who tried to treat him.

In 2017, Swansea Police Chief Steven Johnson: "I was told by emergency room staff that he had some sort of writing on his chest, like a marker, that says 'Don't save me,' or 'Don't resuscitate me,' or something like that." Shelton admitted to the attempted murder of Ashley Reeves in 2007. His family said at the time that they only accepted the plea deal to stop "the continuing demonization of Sam." "I just want to continue on with my life and not worry about it," Reeves told The after Shelton was jailed and as she tried to heal from her tragedy, attempting to speak and walk again.

As a result of the conviction, this defendant was sentenced to 20 years in jail for attempted first-degree murder. He refused to face the court or even apologise to the victim when given the chance. Shelton is still behind bars at Illinois’ Hill Correctional Centre serving out his 20 year sentence. He will become eligible for parole in 2024.
