The new term that is taking over TikTok is ‘mask fishing’, it is a new dating horror that was created post-pandemic. ‘Mask fishing’ is similar to ‘catfishing’. On the internet, a catfish is a person who looks completely different online rather than in real life; they trick people into thinking they are more attractive than they really are. TikTok users have come up with a new idea called mask fishing, which is where you look totally different whilst wearing a mask than when you take it off.
Catfishing was really a nightmare to people already, and amid all those cheatings people do, this is also becoming more and more dangerous to innocent people. The phrase Mask Fishing emerged on TikTok as part of the app’s new challenge. On TikTok, TikTokers will be filming themselves while wearing a mask that covers almost all of their face. Then, they take off the face mask and will show what their face looks like in real life and write the caption to the video post as “Am I mask fishing?” People in the comment section will say whether they are mask fishing or not.
