May 25 to 31 Marks the International Week of Solidarity with the Peoples of Non-Self-Governing Territories

From May 25 to 31, the United Nations will commemorate "International Week of Solidarity with the Peoples of Non-Self-Governing Territories." 

Highlights:

  • The United Nations General Assembly declared the Week of Solidarity with the Peoples of Non-Self-Governing Territories on December 6, 1999. 

  • According to the UN Charter, a Non-Self-Governing Territory is defined as one "whose people have not yet gained a complete degree of self-government," according to the UN Charter.

  • Take effective measures to protect and ensure the inhabitants of the Non-Self-Governing Territories' intrinsic rights to their resources, including soil. 

  • To create and maintain sovereignty over the future growth of those resources and seek that the administering powers take steps to protect the people's property rights in these Territories.

History of the Day:

On the 6th of December 1999, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) passed resolution A/RES/54/91, establishing an annual International Week of Solidarity with the Peoples of Non-Self-Governing Territories beginning on May 25. In the year 2000, the week was first observed.
