But when the directors and producers could not find a lyricist, they asked Richie himself to pen the lyrics as well. Lionel Richie was then part of Commodores band. He began as a saxophone player in the band and then went to become the lead vocalist and later the songwriter. The director of the movie also had requested Lionel to cast in a singer like Diana Ross. They together gave this stellar performance that won the song an Oscar.

When Boyz II Men heard the composition of Babyface they were not very keen to do that because of the similarity to this song and their previous composition.
