The Longest Memory is a short novel written by British Writer Fred D’Aguiar, the book was published in 1994. The book was the first ever Guyana-born poet’s first novel. This book is told through different people and in different forms. The story encounters the life of Mr. Whitechapel and he also serves as the first person in the story, he is a old man who going through his sorrows of the past. Each chapter is narrated by a different character, sometimes speaking through verses or in the second person. Most of the chapters are narrated by characters central to the story, however, chapter 11 is purely made up fictitious.

The plot of the story is that a young slave and also the half brother of Whitechapel who is also a slave in the plantation in Virginia Chapel, falls in love with the daughter of the plantation owner. He tries to elope and join his girlfriend in the north. But his father betrays his whereabouts, fearing his son will not be captured and returned home to the plantation. Chapel is captured and whipped by Sanders.jr the overseer. Chapel captures fever from the whipping and dies later. Everybody in the plantation blames whitechapel for Chapel’s death. the owner of the plantation in Virginia Mr. WhiteChapel, did not know about the issue as he was out of town on that day. He had given specific information to hold the slave until he was returned, which order was not carried out by Sander.Jr. The book also comprises of the memoriees of oher characters such as Cook and Lydia. It is then finished with extracts from the Virginia local newspaper of the year 1810 having direct connection with the events of the story.
