At sunrise, Brahmins wake up and then take holy water. The Brahmins wear a new sacred thread on Avani Avittam called 'Janeyu' or 'Yajnopavit'. It will be the most important tradition of Avani Avittam and during this period, Vedic mantras are sung. Typically, it is a community observance held on the riverbank or pond.

The Avani Avittam fest symbolizes a new beginning of Veda's study. This day is considered very propitious in Hindu mythology, as Lord Vishnu was personified on this day as Lord Hayagriva, the God of wisdom. The one who restored the Vedas to Lord Brahma was Lord Hayagriva. It is also celebrated as Hayagriva Jayanti.
