Return Youtube Dislike Not Working

"Return YouTube Dislikes" debuted shortly after Google shut down the official visible counts, and it has continued to operate despite Google's shutdown of all public data on dislike counts. The project is a browser extension, with Google Chrome being the most popular method.

A recent update to the Return YouTube Dislikes extension disabled the tool for many users because it required new permissions to function. Unfortunately, this caused confusion because a pop-up message informed users that the extension needed permission to "read and change" their data.

On the project's official Discord channel, the developers confirmed that this change is only used to access data on a single URL - This is required for the extension's new debug helper tool to work. A previous version of the attachment, v2.1.0.0, requested "localhost permission," but this was an error on the part of the developers. That permission request was removed in v2.1.0.2.

The removal of dislike counts on YouTube in November 2021 caused a massive uproar in the community. However, according to a new Mozilla Foundation report, the dislike button has little effect on the YouTube experience. The report, released today, discovered two major issues with the tools that YouTube provides users to indicate that they no longer want to see certain types of content. First, it's unclear what each tool does; second, using those tools has a different impact on recommendations than users expect.

The foundation monitored the YouTube activity of 22,722 people and polled 2,758 about their interactions with the content in their feeds. More than 39% of those surveyed felt that YouTube's user controls did not affect their recommendations, while 23% felt the controls had a mixed response.

According to the study, clicking "don't recommend channel" prevented 43 percent of bad recommendations, removing a video from your watch history prevented 29 percent, clicking the dislike button prevented 12 percent and clicking "not interested" prevented 11 percent. Users believed that YouTube did not listen to them because it did not.

Google owns YouTube, a US-based online video-sharing and social networking platform. It was first shown on February 14, 2005, by Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim. It is the world's second most visited website, trailing only Google. Every day, YouTube has over one billion monthly users who watch over one billion hours of video. In May 2019, more than 500 hours of video were uploaded every minute. Google paid $1.65 billion for YouTube in October 2006. Because of Google's ownership, YouTube's business model has evolved; it no longer relies solely on advertisements for revenue. Instead, YouTube now offers paid content such as movies and exclusive content. In addition, YouTube and approved producers participate in Google's AdSense program, which increases revenue for both parties. According to reports, it has grown from a modest video streaming platform to an effective service with sales of $19.8 billion in 2020.
