When is Radha Ashtami 2020?

According to the Hindu Calendar, Radha Ashtami is observed in the month of Bhadrapada, on the eighth day of Shukla Paksha. Radha Ashtami falls 15 days after Janmashtami, the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna. As per the English calendar this year, the day is celebrated on the 26th of August. Radha Ashtami is popularly known as Radha Jayanti as she is believed to be the reincarnation of Goddess Lakshmi and is revered and worshipped with a lot of devotion and enthusiasm.

What is Radha Ashtami?

Radha Ashtami is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Shri Radha Rani who is considered to be the consort of Lord Krishna and reincarnation of Goddess Lakshmi. Special prayers, pooja, and fastings are conducted by the devotees and they dance with gaiety singing the stories of the birth of  Shree Radha Rani and her divine relationship with Lord Krishna. It is believed that Shri Radharani, an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi, desired to be the consort and companion of Lord Krishna and so she decided to accompany Lord Krishna during his sojourn on earth.

Where is Radha Ashtami Celebrated?

The festival is celebrated with utmost devotion and piety in all SriKrishna Temples across the country and especially in the temples situated in North India. In Vrindavan, Mathura which is considered to be sacred and the birthplace of Lord Krishna the festival is celebrated every grandly with much pious and devotion.  Radha Ashtami is celebrated with more grandeur and enthusiasm in Barsana, the birthplace of Shri Radha Rani. Radhashtami is also widely and elaborately commemorated in the Brij which is also considered to be another sacred place of Lord Krishna. On this day, idols of Radha Krishna are traditionally dressed in flowers.

How is Radha Ashtami Observed?

On the eve of Radha Jayanthi or Radha, Ashtami devotees seek the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi by observing a fast or called vrat for a half-day but some devotees observe it for a full day. By mid-day, the idol of Radha is placed after dipping the idol in the holy river which is considered as a holy bath, and later the idol is decorated with flowers and new fresh attire.

The prasad is distributed to all the devotees as it is considered to be blessed by the deity and is holy. After the aarti and prasad distribution, the chanting of Radha Gayatri Mantra starts. Radha Gayatri mantra is chanted with fervor and devotion. The Radha Gayatri Mantra is considered to be very popular and widely chanted by all devotees on Radha Ashtami.
