Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Prime Minister Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) on May 1, 2016, in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh. Eight thousand crores were allocated for the implementation of the scheme. Therefore, it was started for three years from FY 2016-17. The project's main objective is to provide fuel for clean cooking in rural areas, mainly to low-income families. We cannot ignore the fact that the use of fossil fuels and conventional fuels has a severe impact on the health of women and children in villages. Using LPG as fuel will keep the health and the surrounding environment clean and help in breathing.

Key Features of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY)

Following are the Key Features of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana

  • Under the scheme, the LPG connection has been issued in the name of an adult woman of the BPL family. But one condition for this is that no family should already have an LPG connection.

  • Eligibility for the connection was identified based on the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) list.

  • The Central Government has offered a new LPG connection with the assistance of up to 1600 rupees.

  • The customer had to pay the cost of the gas stove and purchase the first refill himself. For this, the facility of EMI was also provided to the families to meet the cost of the stove and cylinder.

Benefits of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY)

Under Prime Minister Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), there is a provision to provide LPG connections to 5 crores BPL families. This is to provide financial support of Rs 1600 for LPG connection, interest-free loan to buy a gas stove, and refill by oil marketing companies. The administrative cost of 1600 rupees includes a cylinder, pressure regulator, booklet, safety hoses, etc., which are managed by the government.

This scheme employed about 1 lakh. This scheme has also encouraged the 'Make in India' campaign and promoted women's empowerment. Provided healthy fuel for cooking and attempts to prevent health-related hazards among millions of rural populations due to the use of fossil fuels.

Revised Scheme of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY)

In February 2018, the scheme's targets were revised to 8 crores LPG connections with extended/relaxed identification criteria under the program Extended (E-PMUY) with an extra allocation of Rs 4800 crores.
